Primark, the Irish low-cost fashion chain, is negotiating with the unions a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) in light of the situation derived from this second wave of the pandemic, as many stores have had to close in some communities.

Primark wanted to present an ERTE for organizational and production reasons

that will affect the entire workforce in Spain (more than 7,000 people), although it is still negotiating with the workers' representatives on what conditions it will be done.

Primark has 49 stores in Spain and a workforce of more than 7,500 workers.

Many of its premises are in shopping centers (closed, due to restrictions, in some communities, such as Castilla y León or Navarra, for example).

"These are precisely the stores that sell the most," explain sources from the sector, while "those at street level are suffering the most from the pandemic," as is the case of the megastore that the brand has on Gran Vía street. from Madrid.

The Irish multinational

wanted to include all its stores in this ERTE for organizational reasons until August 31, 2021.

They intended to include the workers of those that are temporarily closed as a result of the restrictions decreed by the autonomous communities to stop the pandemic.

They also intended to include (something that the unions reject) those store workers whose sales decrease from a certain threshold, as reported by CCOO, who

had asked the company to guarantee that there will be no layoffs after the end of the ERTE

in case for it to prosper.

The chain, like the rest of the competition, has suffered the impact of the pandemic, not only during the months in which the stores were closed.

Also later, due to the drop in consumption.

In its last fiscal year, which ended in September, it

had a profit of 402 million euros, 60% less

compared to the same period last year, and its turnover was reduced by 24% compared to the previous year, to 6,545 millions of euros.
