Impossible to evoke this BMW Series 4 without speaking of its large vertical XXL grille: the coupé surprises, astonishes, repels or attracts.

In any case, we salute the audacity of BMW, which dares to reinvent itself, even if it means dividing even within its own fans.

Apart from this point of contention, the Series 4 displays real elegance, with an even more fluid roof drop than on the previous model, and an obvious connection with the large Series 8.

The interior will hardly shock regulars of the brand since it is identical to that of the 3 Series. And this is excellent news, because BMW is today one of the last premium manufacturers not to give in to " everything on the screen ”.

There are therefore buttons for the main functions including air conditioning, but also a control wheel to control multimedia.

And all of this is perfectly ergonomic and a hundred times more practical when driving than touch screens, we can never say it enough!

BMW also stands out with its contactless controls: simple hand gestures in the passenger compartment allow you to adjust the volume of the radio or toggle between the different menus.

However, do not believe that the screens are absent, since in addition to the main 10.25-inch screen, the driver can opt for a customizable digital instrumentation on a 12.3-inch screen.

Double-dealing

It was in its most powerful version in the catalog that we tested the BMW 4 Series: the M440i.

This version receives the 6-cylinder in-line engine with 3 liters of displacement, which also serves as a working basis for the future M4, and here offers the perfect grand touring character that one would expect from a BMW coupe.

Comfort mode (or even Eco Pro) and automatic gearbox on Drive, the Series 4 is a formidable bitumen swallower, combining almost muffled damping with running silence, with an average consumption that will approach 8 liters in normal use.

An astonishing figure considering the 374 horses available.

But even in wise driving, the feeling of responsiveness and latent dynamism reminds us every moment that we are in a BMW.

The passage of the chassis and the gearbox in Sport mode confirms this.

The six-cylinder then readily flies into the towers, hinting at a hoarse exhaust sound, but never arrogant.

The gearbox downshifts on the fly under braking, and maintains an engine speed high enough to allow full potential to be used on the go-around.

The series of bends on our test route are therefore a pure treat and the perfect playground for this Series 4 despite its substantial weight: 1,740 kg all the same.

With the added safety of the four-wheel drive, so welcome on the carpet of dead leaves that litter the asphalt.
