Spain received 87% fewer tourists in September than last year on the same dates.

Specifically,

1.1 million international tourists arrived, compared to the 8.8 million who visited us last year.

This means that we have lost more than seven million travelers in that month alone.

This supposes further deepening the fall registered in the previous months, when the decrease in arrivals was also greater than 70%.

In August, for example, 2.4 million tourists arrived, compared to more than 10 million in the same month of 2019.

So far this year,

16.8 million foreigners have visited us (74.9% less), while last year 67 million had visited us by now.

We have lost more than 50 million visitors.

As a consequence of this collapse,

the total spending of these internationals has also done so by 89.9% compared to the same month of 2019.

In the first nine months, the accumulated spending reached 17,715 million euros.

In 2019 they were 73,516 million, which means that Spain has stopped entering more than 55,000 million euros.

Tricky autumn

September has been a more complicated month than the previous ones, because the second wave of the pandemic was already more advanced and restrictions on mobility have continued.

The lockdowns decreed last week in Germany, France and the Kingdom will further complicate the autumn.

The quarantine in the United Kingdom, which has always been our main market, has caused many fewer Britons to arrive and

France

is now

the main country of residence for tourists who visit us.

389,773 people from the neighboring country did so in September, 60.4% less compared to the same month last year.

They are already 34.2% of the total.

The fall in arrival of British people was 92% in September (161,899 tourists) and that of Germans also 92% (90,495).

In September, Catalonia was the main destination for arriving tourists, with 24.2% of all visits.

In other words, two out of 10 foreigners who traveled to Spain went to this community.

They are followed by the Comunitat Valenciana (16.2%) and Andalucía (15.7%).

So far this year the regions with the most visits have been Catalonia (with almost 3.5 million and a decrease of 77.7% compared to the same period in 2019), the Canary Islands (with about 3.3 million and a decrease in 65.9%) and Andalusia (with almost 2.5 million, 74.6% less).
