His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance, and Chairman of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, yesterday, through a three-dimensional virtual platform, inaugurated the Water, Energy and Environment Technology Exhibition (WETEX) and Dubai Solar Energy 2020, which is organized by the Authority under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Hamdan bin Rashid:

- “We look forward to solutions and recommendations that serve the future of mankind, and help support and enhance the prospects for sustainable development around the world.”

The virtual 3D carbon-neutral exhibition will run until October 28, with the participation of 1076 companies from 52 countries.

A special session

In his speech during the virtual opening ceremony, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum welcomed the exhibitors and participants in this exceptional session of the event, which cemented its position as the most prominent of its kind in the region.

His Highness said: “I welcome you to the Water, Energy and Environment Technology Exhibition (WETEX 2020) in its 22nd session, using the latest innovative digital tools, solutions and technologies in the fields of water, clean energy, environment, oil and gas.”

His Highness expressed his hope that the exhibition would come out with solutions and recommendations that serve the future of mankind, and help support and enhance the prospects for sustainable development around the world.

His Highness added: “This session of the (carbon neutral) exhibition, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, is characterized by an exceptional experience for exhibitors and visitors, and the possibility of a meeting between exhibitors and decision-makers, in addition to seminars and sessions in which officials, experts and influential personalities participate Green economy, smart cities and sustainability », expressing his hope that the exhibition will witness successful participations, meetings, recommendations and practical proposals to support the process of sustainable development locally and globally.

Challenges and opportunities

In turn, the managing director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, founder and president of "WETEX and Dubai Solar Energy" exhibition, Saeed Al Tayer, said that organizing the 22nd session of "WETEX", despite the obstacles associated with the spread of the "Covid-19" pandemic, confirms Dubai's success in transforming Challenges to opportunities, and highlights the advanced digital infrastructure that Dubai possesses, and the capabilities of the authority, which helps it to provide all its services according to the highest standards of availability, reliability and efficiency.

Al Tayer emphasized that «WETEX and Dubai Solar Energy» is the largest exhibition of its kind in the region, and one of the largest specialized exhibitions in the world. Its solutions and products, discussing best practices, latest technologies and innovations.

Projects and initiatives

DEWA will display, in its virtual platform, during the exhibition, three-dimensional models of a number of its projects and initiatives, including a model of the highest solar tower in the world, and the hydropower station with pumping and storage technology in Hatta, which is the first of its kind in the region, with a production capacity of 250 Megawatts, and the Authority’s new main building, "Al-Sail", which will be the highest, largest and smartest government building with zero energy in the world, and the four-legged robotic (Spot), which the authority uses in its internal operations.

Inventions and innovations

The authority also displays a number of inventions and innovations of its employees, such as the "pipe gutter" that works with an intelligent system through pipes that identify themselves in the event of a breakage or water leakage, as a special substance is added to the pipes from the outside that interacts with water in the event of a leak. Tube alerts are sent to a system controller for data collection, monitoring and control (SCADA);

The "smart helmet" equipped with a camera, based on augmented reality technology, helps engineers working in power plants to accomplish their tasks efficiently.

102 virtual seminars

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is organizing 102 virtual seminars on the sidelines of the exhibition «WETEX and Dubai Solar Energy 2020», focusing on digital transformation standards, the use of artificial intelligence and innovation in the energy and sustainability sector.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and founder and president of the exhibition "WETEX and Dubai Solar Energy", said that the carbon-neutral 3D version of the exhibition, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, provides a new experience for exhibitors. And visitors from all over the world, and it allows companies to display their products in an innovative way through three-dimensional platforms, specially designed to suit the needs of each company, as well as the possibility of holding meetings and participating in seminars and workshops based on the latest smart technologies in this field.

Al Tayer added that visitors to the exhibition can visit the authority’s stand without the need to travel, to learn about the “Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex”, which includes the highest solar tower in the world, with a height of 262.44 meters, within the fourth phase of the complex, which combines two energy technologies. Concentrated solar and solar photovoltaic energy according to the independent producer system, with a capacity of 950 megawatts, pointing out that the production capacity of the complex will reach 5,000 megawatts by 2030, with investments of 50 billion dirhams.
