Student jobs are much less numerous since the confinement.

  • "It's hard to be 20 years old in 2020," said Emmanuel Macron, during his speech on October 15.

"20 Minutes" took him at his word by exploring several areas of the lives of young people at the time of the coronavirus.

  • The material life of young people has notably become more difficult in recent months, as the student job market has dried up.

  • But there are still some good veins to explore.

Desperately looking for jobs.

At the start of the 2020 academic year, odd student jobs are not legion.

However, according to the Observatory of Student Life (OVE), a little less than half of students (46%) exercise a paid activity during the year.

And these jobs allow them to finance their course, to pay for their apartment, to afford vacations, to allow themselves leisure ...

Consequence: the precariousness of young people has increased in recent months.

“All the more so the increase in the cost of living for students is 3.6% at the start of the school year, because housing and transport costs have increased in large cities.

This explains why requests to the National Emergency Aid Fund jumped by 40% between January and August 2020, ”indicates Mélanie Luce, the president of UNEF.

The curfew has been another blow of the bamboo

The confinement had already deprived them of jobs, as pointed out by INSEE in a study released last week: among the young people who had a job before the confinement, more than a third were not working in May.

This had resulted in a significant loss of income, of 274 euros per month on average, according to OVE.

And among the students who had interrupted their paid activity, only 27% of them benefited from the partial unemployment scheme.

For others, there was no safety net.

The deconfinement had given the students a little respite, which unfortunately did not last.

“Job offers were well distributed this summer, but we again feel a decline in economic activity since the start of the school year,” observes Sandrine Aboudara Pauly, general delegate of local missions.

And the curfew put in place in Ile-de-France and eight major metropolises has been a further blow to young people.

Because it has shattered the night jobs in the restaurant business or the opportunities for baby-sittings in the evening.

Especially since bars had already been closed in areas on maximum alert in the face of the epidemic.

More competition between young people to get a job

On Jobaviz, the job site

regional centers for university and school works (Crous), "the level of offers is 15 to 20% lower than at the same time last year", explains its spokesperson.

Same observation on the Indeed job site: “The

The number of job offers fell by 24% in September 2020 compared to September 2019. As small shops need less salespeople because their activity is reduced, offers for retail sales have, for example, fallen by 30%.

And in catering, they have fallen by 50% compared to last September, ”notes Alexandre Judes, economist at Indeed.

“The large distribution also employs fewer young people in reinforcement in the evening and on weekends, because some French people are afraid of going to do their shopping in hypermarkets.

There are also fewer babysitting opportunities because more employees are teleworking and picking up their children themselves from school.

And in case of extra work, companies prefer to give overtime to their employees than to hire a student, ”analyzes Stéphanie Delestre, president of the Qapa recruitment platform.

The competition between students to get a job has even increased: "The rate of application in relation to the number of advertisements for student jobs is 33% against 6% for all offers", notes Alexandre Judes .

"You have to open your chakras"

But despite these figures at half mast, there are still some veins to be exploited for students, as Stéphanie Delestre underlines: "With the prospect of

Black Friday

and Christmas, job offers will be seized in logistics and sales".

According to her, students should also broaden their job search: "You have to open your chakras and not shy away from the offers that are offered in fast food, catering, logistics ..." Alexandre Judes agrees, "L agriculture offers real opportunities in particular because market gardeners have fewer labor from neighboring countries, ”he underlines.

Homework help is a niche to be explored because many students have some catching up to do because of the school days lost in recent months.

Some of the students will also be able to count on the aid of 150 euros would be extended to 400,000 young people benefiting from housing assistance as well as to scholarship students, as announced by Prime Minister Jean Castex on Sunday.

A helping hand, certainly appreciable, but which will not always be sufficient.
