Electric power company "JERA" Stop or abolish all inefficient coal-fired power generation October 13, 18:41

JERA, an electric power company that integrates the thermal power generation businesses of TEPCO and Chubu Electric Power, has decided to suspend or abolish all coal-fired power generation, which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide and is inefficient, by 2030.

JERA held an online press conference on the 13th, revealing a new plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the power generation business to virtually zero by 2050.

According to this, all seven inefficient coal-fired power plants in Japan, including those operated jointly with other electric power companies, will be stopped or abolished by 2030.

In addition, for coal-fired power generation with high power generation efficiency and thermal power generation using LNG = liquefied natural gas, we are proceeding with a demonstration experiment to generate electricity by mixing ammonia and hydrogen, which do not emit carbon dioxide, with fuel, aiming for full-scale operation.

The government has a policy of gradually reducing inefficient coal-fired power plants, but JERA is the first domestic power generation company to decide on a concrete reduction plan.

At the press conference, JERA Managing Director Hisae Okuda said, "As Japan's largest power generation company operating globally, we have a social responsibility to make the utmost efforts toward decarbonization."
