China News Service, Beijing, October 12 (Reporter Ruan Yulin and Ma Haiyan) Xie Zhenhua, Special Advisor for Climate Change Affairs of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and Dean of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development of Tsinghua University, said in Beijing on the 12th that China has always attached great importance to climate change. , Adhere to green development, circular development, and low-carbon development, and has always taken it as an important strategic measure to promote high-quality sustainable development.

Xie Zhenhua made the above statement at the Carbon Neutrality Seminar and China’s long-term low-carbon development strategy and transformation path research project results press conference held that day.

He said that China will integrate the response to climate change into the overall social and economic development. Starting from the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the systemic and binding goal of reducing carbon emission intensity per unit of GDP (gross domestic product) will be the starting point to promote low-carbon emissions. In 2015, we proposed independent contribution targets such as carbon emissions peaking around 2030 and reaching the peak as soon as possible. We adopted various policy measures such as adjusting industrial structure, saving energy and resources, increasing forest carbon sinks, and establishing and operating carbon markets to promote the whole Society is accelerating its transition to green and low-carbon.

Compared with 2005, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2019 dropped by 48%.

This is equivalent to a reduction of approximately 5.62 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, a corresponding reduction of 11.92 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 11.3 million tons of nitrogen oxides.

During the same period, GDP grew by more than four times, the proportion of coal consumption dropped from 72.4% to 55.7%, and the proportion of non-fossil energy in primary energy increased from 7.4% to 15.3%.

"It can be seen that policies and actions to address climate change will not only not hinder economic development, but also help improve the quality of economic growth and foster new industries and markets," Xie Zhenhua said.

Xie Zhenhua pointed out that tackling climate change is an inherent need for China's sustainable development.

We must maintain strategic determination. In the "14th Five-Year Plan", "15th Five-Year Plan" period and for a longer period of time in the future, we will always adhere to the concept of green and low-carbon development, promote the construction of ecological civilization, and continue to adopt policies and actions to actively respond to climate change. , 100% implement the nationally determined contribution target that has been put forward, and strive to do better.

Xie Zhenhua said that after this year's new crown pneumonia epidemic, achieving economic recovery through green and low-carbon development has become a general consensus in the international community.

Faced with major crises such as the new crown pneumonia epidemic and climate change, mankind has begun to rethink the relationship between man and nature, and has increasingly realized that mankind and nature are a community of shared destiny. We must respect, conform and protect nature, and pay more attention to it. Man and nature coexist in harmony, and take precautions to cope with global challenges.
