The airports of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands

will be the first in Spain to test tourists from territories with a high incidence of contagion,

both upon arrival in the archipelagos and when they leave.

In addition, they will bear the cost of the possible quarantine of tourists who test positive and cannot return to their country until after 14 days.

The tests will be free for travelers.

The Government has reached an agreement with the autonomous governments of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands this protocol for tourist corridors with European countries.

The Canary archipelago, in particular, has just started its high season now.

The Balearic Islands have lost the summer campaign and, with these measures, it is expected to recover at least part of the autumn tourist activity.

According to this protocol, all travelers arriving in the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands from a territory with a cumulative incidence greater than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants will have to present a negative test carried out 48 hours before the flight, at most.

Before leaving the islands, all travelers must take a test

48 hours before the flight.

As explained by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, these tests will have no cost for the tourist.

In case of positive?

If the tourist tests positive, he will not be able to fly and will have to quarantine at the same destination.

This is one of the aspects that most deters tourists when it comes to going abroad: staying in limbo in a foreign country.

For this reason,

the governments of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands have decided that they will take care of the

necessary

coverage

in these cases.

For this, a series of accommodations will be enabled and they would also cover healthcare or hospitalization if necessary.

The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, has said that these protocols are the first and

the Government hopes to be able to extend them to other peninsular tourist destinations.

"The protocols are a useful instrument to reach agreements with our European partners that allow us to recover mobility and reactivate tourist flows in safety conditions", he pointed out.

Both the tourism sector and the airlines have been demanding for months that tests be carried out at airports and quarantines be eliminated.
