Mazda Rotary Engine -

DR

Developed in the 1950s by Felix Wankel, the rotary engine is distinguished by its original architecture which includes one or more triangular-shaped pistons (also called rotors), which rotate in the engine.

The advantages of this device are numerous: movements, as well as friction, vibrations and noise are reduced.

Adopted by several manufacturers such as NSU, Citroën or Mazda, it has proved to be restrictive on several points (heating, consumption, fragility) and has been gradually abandoned.

However, the rotary engine does not seem to have had its last word as Mazda boss Akira Marumoto has said it will return to the manufacturer's lineup by 2022.

In all likelihood, it would be used first in the MX-30, an electric vehicle in which it would act as a range extender.

In fact, its compactness makes the Wankel the ideal motor to fulfill the function of generator.
