As the auctions for 5G frequencies have barely ended, operators will start installing their antennas to deploy the network in France.

5G should be operational at the end of the year, but the first packages are already there at Bouygues Telecom and Orange.

With one observation: the bill will increase.

Telephone operators do not waste time.

A week after the end of the auction for the allocation of 5G frequencies, and even before the deployment of the network on the territory, the first commercial offers for the general public are arriving.

Orange, the market leader, presented its first 5G packages on Thursday, following in the footsteps of Bouygues Telecom which had drawn in the month of June.

And, already, one thing is clear: prices will increase.

Between slightly higher prices for comparable services and the disappearance of "small packages", 5G will have a cost for consumers.

For equal content, a 5G package more expensive than 4G of 5 euros

Concretely, the price of Orange 5G packages ranges from 40 to 95 euros per month (actual price without the reduction valid for one year), against 17 to 45 euros for current 4G packages.

For example, the plan with unlimited calls and SMS plus 70 GB of data is 35 euros per month in 4G compared to 40 euros in 5G.

And the prices are even a little higher at Bouygues Telecom, with a minimum package of 42 euros per month (for 60 GB of data) and a maximum of 70 euros (for 120 GB).

The particularity at Orange is a plan with unlimited data that did not exist in 4G.

So, yes, 5G plans are a bit more expensive.

"Our doctrine is 'more for more': a slightly more expensive package but with more services," said Orange CEO Stéphane Richard.

In this case, this means a more powerful flow but also the possibility of having several Internet SIM cards for free.

In other words, 5G is a technological advance and you will have to agree to pay a few euros more to benefit from it.

"A technology that allows you to go 50 times faster": should we be afraid of 5G?

No more "little" cheap packages

In reality, what inflates the price compared to 4G is also and above all the disappearance of "small" packages, cheap but with little data.

All operators now offer it, from 2 to 15 euros per month, often with limited calls and a maximum of 10 GB of data.

Except that these offers will no longer be adapted to the future mobile network: in 5G, 10 GB of Internet will be consumed much faster than in 4G.

The scale changes and, with it, the data envelope provided.

Note: these packages are compatible with 4G and 5G.

It is therefore possible to subscribe to one today, even though the operators have not yet started to deploy the network.

As soon as 5G is in place, you can benefit from it without changing your plan.

On the condition, however, of having a suitable telephone and that your city is covered.
