Billionaires have become richer than ever during the corona crisis, according to a report by Swiss bank UBS and accountancy firm PwC on Wednesday.
The wealth of 2,000 billionaires, who together account for about 98 percent of the wealth of all billionaires, grew by more than a quarter during the early months of the pandemic.
The wealth of the group of billionaires rose for the first time above 10 trillion dollars (nearly 8.5 trillion euros) due to a rise in stock prices and growth in the technology and healthcare sectors.
In July, the group had assets of $ 10.2 trillion, breaking its late 2019 record of $ 8.9 trillion.
The group's assets have flipped several times over the past 25 years.
It is estimated to have grown five to ten times larger.
Still, this year's growth is exceptional.
Between April 7 and July 31, billionaires' net worth grew in all sectors studied.
In the technology sector and healthcare, that growth amounted to 36 to 44 percent.
Between 2018 and July 2020, tech billionaires saw their net worth grow 42.5 percent to $ 1.8 trillion.
Healthcare billionaires saw their wealth increase by 50.3 percent to $ 658.6 billion over the same period.
Just over two hundred of the billionaires surveyed have pledged to donate some of their assets to fight the corona crisis.
In total, this involves $ 7.2 billion in donations.
