Two airlines are laying off tens of thousands of employees

Two of the largest airlines in the United States announced that they will begin laying off tens of thousands of their employees today due to the failure of the US Congress to reach an agreement on providing new aid to the sector that has been severely affected by the repercussions of the "Covid-19" pandemic.

American Airlines said it would launch the "difficult process" of placing 19,000 of its employees in technical unemployment.

And it was only hours before United Airlines followed suit, saying that it would begin the process of laying off 13,432 of its employees.

However, the two companies left the door open to the possibility of reversing this decision, by saying that they would cancel the layoffs if the Democrats and Republicans in Congress reached "in the coming days" an agreement to provide aid to the sector.

Like all other large companies in the US aviation sector, American and United pledged in the spring not to lay off any employee until September 30th, in return for subsidies totaling $ 25 billion.

However, this benefit expired last night.
