The French equipment manufacturer Valéo has developed a unit capable of purifying the air and eliminating the vast majority of bacteria on board public transport.

This could allow operators to regain a form of serenity in the face of the economic crisis linked to the coronavirus.

This is an innovation imagined by the equipment manufacturer Valéo to reassure those who have abandoned public transport and in particular buses: the French firm has developed a health system capable of eliminating more than 95% of viruses, including Covid-19.

It is an air purification system that uses UV ray technology, like in hospitals.

"Very powerful UV rays"

This new product consists of a box that can be installed on all types of buses and coaches, in the air conditioning system or in the ventilation.

It is the combination of a UV lamp and a labyrinth of light, which prevents the diffusion of rays outside the case.

Concretely, "we use very powerful, bactericidal UV rays, which will clean the air", explains Guillaume Devauchelle, innovation director of Valéo.

"The circulating air is freed of its impurities. Then the residual bacteria are killed by these UV rays."

"Permanent" disinfection

The purpose of this unit is to constitute a health shield to reassure passengers, especially those who sometimes have no other option than the bus.

But the aim is also to help transport operators avoid an economic crisis after the health crisis: "The idea is to allow fleet operators to fill their buses", insists Guillaume Devauchelle.

"We are not afraid of someone who is up front, sitting in the same seat. The system is constantly disinfecting."
