China News Service Jilin September 25 (Shi Hongyu) On the 25th, Unit 6 of the comprehensive treatment (reconstruction) project of the Xinyuan Fengman Hydropower Station of the State Grid was officially put into commercial operation.

With this as a sign, the first large-scale hydropower reconstruction project with a "100-meter dam height, tens of billions of storage capacity, and one million installed capacity" in the history of hydropower in the world has realized all generating units in operation.

After the operation of No. 6 unit, all the 6 units of the comprehensive treatment (reconstruction) project of Fengman Hydropower Station have been put into production and generated electricity.

These generators continuously convert water energy into electric energy and transmit it to the Northeast Power Grid. The "old plump" with a history of more than 80 years is rejuvenated with youthful vitality.

Located on the Songhua River in Jilin City, Jilin Province, Fengman Hydropower Station was built in 1937. It was China’s largest hydropower station and the most important water conservancy hub in Northeast China in the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It has also exported more than 2,000 professional managers to hydropower projects such as Gezhouba and Three Gorges, and is known as the "mother of hydropower" and "cradle of hydropower" in China.

The first phase of the Fengman Hydropower Station was built during the War of Resistance Against Japan. After the founding of New China, it went through the second and third phases of expansion projects, with a total installed capacity of 1.0025 million kilowatts.

Limited by historical conditions, the dam of Fengman Hydropower Station has inherent quality defects, which cannot be eradicated despite years of reinforcement and careful maintenance.

In 2007, Fengman Old Dam was assessed as a "sick dam" by the former Dam Safety Supervision Center of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

In October 2012, the comprehensive treatment (reconstruction) project of Fengman Hydropower Station was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

The reconstruction project will rebuild a new dam 120 meters away from the original dam site to completely eliminate the hidden dangers of the old dam.

The new dam is 1068 meters long and 94.5 meters high. Six new 200,000 kilowatt units will be built, and the original two 140,000 kilowatt units will be retained, with a total installed capacity of 1.48 million kilowatts.

In December 2018, the Fengman Old Dam was blasted; in May 2019, the new dam began to store water, and in September of the same year, Unit 1 was put into operation.

Wang Yongtan, chief engineer of the State Grid Xinyuan Company and director of the Fengman Dam Reconstruction Engineering Construction Bureau, said that the full commissioning of this locally-made hydropower station from design to installation proves the strength of "Made in China".

At present, the Fengman New Dam is of excellent quality, with a leakage rate of 7.7 liters per second from the dam foundation, which has reached the international leading level.

At the same time, the new Fengman Hydropower Station restored the flood limit water level of the reservoir to the normal flood limit water level at an elevation of 263.5 meters, doubled the maximum flood control capacity, and completely eliminated the defects of the old hydropower station.

Wang Yongtan said that the comprehensive utilization capacity of the new Fengman Hydropower Station has been greatly improved, and the installed capacity has increased by nearly 50%. It can better meet the downstream needs of 1.5 million mu of farmland for irrigation and the domestic water demand of tens of millions of urban residents. And promote the sustainable development of the economy and society in the Northeast.
