In the summer of 2022, a new kind of motorway will emerge between Sazeret, in the Allier, and Digoin, in Saône-et-Loire.

Drivers who will take this 88-kilometer long portion of the A79 will indeed have to pay the motorway concessionaire but they will no longer see toll barriers, report our colleagues from

France Bleu Pays d'Auvergne

.

Concretely, this means that gantries similar to those of the ecotax will be installed.

When a vehicle passes under it, the license plate will be directly scanned and sent to a computer center which will be responsible for triggering the counter.

Three options to pay

To pay, the holders of an electronic toll will have nothing to do, they will receive their invoice as is usually done.

The others will have two solutions: either create an online account then choose a means of payment, or go to a physical payment terminal installed along this A79.

According to the APRR motorway group and Eiffage, the two companies that are building this motorway, innovation aims to make traffic more fluid but also has an ecological benefit.

"By eliminating the need to stop and restart thermal vehicles at toll barriers, this system contributes to significantly reducing CO2 emissions", assures the Eiffage company.

This will also make it possible to reduce traffic jams on this axis where between 10,000 and 15,000 vehicles circulate per day;

just like the move to 2x2 lanes.
