VW ID.3 -

DR

With the ID.3, Volkswagen is ushering in a new chapter in the history of mobility: in the future, it will come as no surprise that it will be electric and sustainable.

In a few months, the ID.4 SUV will come to expand the family, before, without doubt, the most anticipated still electric "Combi" ID.Buzz, and perhaps other surprises.

Before giving us the keys to this model on which it is betting big, the manufacturer wanted to quickly sweep away one of the faults of electric vehicles said to have no CO2 emissions: "Upon delivery, each customer will receive a certificate proving that the ID.3 was produced with a neutral carbon footprint, "we were told.

This is good, but we know that on the ethical side, the extraction of rare materials used to produce batteries remains problematic, even if the manufacturers and the UN are working to improve the situation.

That being said, let's move on to the product itself.

A friendly look

The ID.3 is unlike any other VW.

She has a rather nice face and by opting for the latest IQ Light headlights, the ID.3 is even able to wink at us and greet us with friendly light animations.

When the German giant wants to take us into a new era, it does not do it halfway!

Even in the interior, we do not necessarily find its marks.

First of all, there is no start button.

The car detects the key and all you have to do is depress the brake pedal, place the gear selector on the right of the digital dashboard (strange positioning, we agree) on "D", and it is left !

You will also have to get used to this new instrument panel which broadcasts some information on three small dials, some of which are replicated on the head-up display.

The information enthusiast of all kinds will have to juggle with the central touch screen, which is not always very practical.

In addition, VW has made the choice of tactile buttons with haptic feedback on the steering wheel, but also on the central console (and even for the panoramic roof flap!), With a "click-drag" function, all not being not always very effective.

In short, general ergonomics is not the strong point of the ID.3!

Good surprise

Fortunately, it concentrates on the essentials: a very pleasant driving which makes zen, and a really comfortable autonomy.

By the way, special mention for the very small turning radius which greatly facilitates U-turns and agility in town in general.

The launch version we tried (1st Edition) has the 58 kWh intermediate battery and a strong 204 horsepower motor driving the rear wheels.

Autonomy announced: up to 426 km.

During our test, we traveled 238 real km and the on-board computer announced that we had lost a range less than this distance.

Usually, it's rather the opposite!

In other words, we consumed less than what is announced by VW: 16.3 kWh / 100 km compared to 16.9.

This launch model is priced from € 37,990 and our fully equipped test model is priced at over € 50,000.

In the coming months, VW will launch a less powerful (146 hp) and less expensive version, as well as a 77 kWh battery version to approach 550 km of WLTP range.

But in our opinion, more than 400 km of radius of action is already more than enough to reassure the anxious.

You just have to think about installing a specific outlet at home in order to avoid several tens of hours of recharging on a "simple" domestic outlet.
