Pass the VAT from 15 to 10% to "save the profession".

This is what the National Union of Hairdressing Companies (Unec) asked the government on Wednesday to deal with the consequences of the health crisis.

"To maintain activity, the sustainability of companies, jobs and support the training effort of young people by our companies", justifies the president of Unec, Christophe Doré, quoted in this press release.

For hairdressers, VAT has been set at 15% for the entire service, since October 2001.

"The whole profession is struggling today" added Christophe Doré.

"We are seeing a drop in consumption of 15 to 40% which, we fear, could be lasting and the corollary of the economic shock suffered by our country".

After the long-awaited reopening of the salons on May 11, the activity of the salons has not been maintained, said Christophe Doré.

“Our sector is now very worried”.

More affected than the hotel industry

According to figures from the Federation of Approved Management Centers (FCGA), the sector's turnover is even more severely affected in the first quarter of 2020 than that of the hotel and restaurant industry.

A petition put online last month by the organization, which represents 96 departmental unions, was signed Wednesday by 14,800 people.

Hairdressing, the second largest craft sector in France, brings together more than 85,000 establishments and 184,000 workers (employees and self-employed).
