On August 13, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to introduce the flood control and disaster relief work this year. Zhou Xuewen, Secretary-General of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, Deputy Minister of Emergency Management and Deputy Minister of Water Resources, said that since June, severe floods have occurred in the Yangtze River, Huaihe River, and Taihu Lake basins in China, and flood prevention and relief work is facing severe challenges. Flood disasters caused 63.46 million people to be affected and direct economic losses of 178.96 billion yuan, 12.7% and 15.5% higher than the average of the previous five years. As a result of the disaster, 219 people died and disappeared, and 54,000 houses collapsed, a decrease of 54.8% and 65.3% from the average of the previous five years. (Edit Zhou Yuchen)
