The UAE has finally announced its success in operating the Barakah reactor, the first peaceful nuclear energy reactor in the Arab world, in a new historic achievement for the country, to become a global example, and to a strong welcome from the World Nuclear Association of Nuclear Operators, for the UAE’s accession to “ The international nuclear family », to become its newest member.

The "Barakah" peaceful nuclear energy plant project is one of the largest new peaceful nuclear energy projects in the world in terms of developing four identical plants, each of which includes a nuclear reactor. The project is also considered one of the most committed to safety and security standards in the world.

The work teams at the Barakah plant succeeded in loading nuclear fuel packages, conducting comprehensive tests and successfully completing the operation of the first plant, Barakah.

The Barakah plant includes four reactors. The production capacity of the reactors is 5600 megawatts. The reactors provide 25% of the state’s electrical energy, and promotes diversification of energy sources and economic diversification in the country.

Emiratis make up more than 60% of the employees of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, and they play a major role in building the project, within a functional cadre of 3,000 employees from 50 nationalities.

According to the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, there are three main reasons for the UAE's peaceful nuclear program: the provision of electricity to the UAE, as the Barakah stations will provide safe, reliable and environmentally friendly energy to the UAE’s electricity grid, starting this year, and the development of the peaceful nuclear energy sector In the country, it will contribute to supporting the economic development of the future of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and supporting the energy diversification strategy.

In addition to that, building the human code in the nuclear sector, as it provides an opportunity for young cadres, especially UAE citizens, to be part of one of the important and unique sectors in the Emirates.

Work on the project began in July 2012, after the issuance of a building permit for the first and second units of the Barakah station, and the project gradually developed over the past years, until the first operation of the Barakah reactors was announced on the first of August.

The construction work began on the second plant in 2013, while the Corporation worked on pouring the first safety concrete in the third and fourth plants during the years 2014 and 2015 respectively, so that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant became the first site in the world where four identical nuclear plants were constructed safely and simultaneously.

Completion operations continued to exceed more than 94% in the total of the four stations, as construction work has been completed in the first station, which started the operation phase, while construction work has finally ended in the second station, which is expected to be operational during the coming months, while the completion rate in the third station has reached more than 92%, and the fourth stop to more than 85%.

In February 2020, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation granted an operating license to the Nawah Energy Company, affiliated to the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, which is responsible for operating and maintaining the four nuclear plants in Barakah, allowing it to start loading nuclear fuel safely in the first plant.

The UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program relies on best practices and accumulated experience in the global nuclear energy industry.
