Adif has put out to tender the supply of electricity for the entire railway network, both the AVE and the conventional, for the next two years, which constitutes the largest electricity contract in the country , given that it represents an amount of 614 million euros , as reported by the public company.

The promoter and manager of the railway network, in line with its sustainability strategy, requests that its energy supply be of 100% renewable origin . The 'mega contract' consists of providing Adif with the electricity necessary for the circulation of AVE and conventional trains, and the lighting and operation of the stations and the rest of the railway facilities during the years 2021 and 2022.

All this is estimated to suppose a consumption of 3,157.6 gigawatts per hour (GWh) in 2021 and 3,401.1 GWh in 2022, according to the company chaired by Isabel Pardo de Vera. However, Adif is putting out to tender the contract divided into a total of 21 lots depending on the supply points that the railway network has distributed throughout the country.

The new contract will also be the first to include the provision of electricity to new railway operators who will be able to compete with Renfe once the train passenger transport opens up to competition in December this year. The French SNCF has already announced that it will start operating its low-cost AVE on the line between Madrid and Barcelona at Easter in 2021 and Ilsa, a Trenitalia and Air Nostrum firm, will start its service in January 2022.

In fact, the amount that goes out to tender is higher than the 507.5 million that was awarded in June 2018 to the one currently in force and which ends at the end of this year. Iberdrola, Endesa and Acciona have been the railway suppliers since the contract for the 2019 and 2020 financial years was awarded in a public tender.

In addition, the Council of Ministers authorized the tender for the maintenance of all the elements of the infrastructure and the track for the lines of the conventional network and the Adif metric gauge lines during the years 2021 and 2022, for an estimated value of 573,200. 000 euros, including possible extensions.

The objective of this contract is to maintain the infrastructure in an optimal state, which guarantees its reliability, as well as the comfort of the travelers . For this, infrastructure surveillance is necessary, as well as, in the event of any incident, the necessary conditions for the provision of transport services are restored as quickly as possible.
