Didenko stressed that if Nord Stream 2 were economically unprofitable for Germany, then "it simply would not have arisen."

"Diversification in the supply of resources is a matter of economic security, and, naturally, any country should receive vital resources, and the costs of suppliers from different sources are absolutely normal," the economist explained.

At the same time, the expert noted that Germany is a long-standing economic and political partner of the United States, therefore, according to Didenko, it is hardly worth expecting any drastic steps from the FRG.

Earlier, the head of the German-Russian group in the Bundestag, a deputy from the Alternative for Germany party, Robbie Schlund, told RIA Novosti that the FRG's political response to the threat of sanctions against Nord Stream 2 should contain three points: the need for this project, commitment to the interests of the German and the European economy and partnership with Russia.

In July, the board of representatives of the US Congress approved the draft defense budget for the 2021 fiscal year, which contains amendments to strengthen sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
