BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé - DR

The Series 2 Gran Coupé therefore opens the ball for the renewal of the family 2, which will have the special feature of using two different technical bases. If the future two-door coupé and cabrio will use the platform of the 3 Series, and therefore keep the promise to remain pushed by the rear wheels, the Gran Coupe is based on those of the Series 1. The two models are therefore twins until the middle. from the roof, and are pulled by the front wheels.

On the design side, even if we would like more simplicity, the 2 Series Gran Coupé is nicely muscular, expressive, sporty, and the rear part stops at the border of heaviness to remain athletic. The car is a bit longer than the 1 Series, but the wheelbase is the same. This means that the rear roominess is the same, sufficient but not extraordinary for adults, but that the trunk progresses, becoming worthy of a car with family pretensions. The cabin is that of the 1 Series: same dashboard, same console, same digital instruments, same ultra-connected multimedia system with artificial intelligence, same totally impeccable quality and ... same tendency to increase the bill as you go. check options. No surprise!

A traction that can seduce

Currently, BMW only offers classic engines: diesel 1.5 116hp and 2.0 136, 150 or 190hp, or petrol 1.5 140hp and 2.0 306hp (M235i xDrive). Apart from the 218i and 218d, all the engines are fitted as standard to 8-speed automatic transmissions. We tried the 220d (190hp) and the M235i xDrive.

From the first, we will say that the engine is probably one of the smoothest and most discreet 4-cylinder diesels of the moment, to the point of giving lessons to Mercedes. As for the M235i xDrive engine… Ah, what a marvel! Available at all speeds, in perfect harmony with its 8 automatic gearbox, it distributes its 306 horsepower and 450 Nm to the 4 wheels with fabulous ardor. It is a very generous engine, whose performance remains accessible, even for the non-expert driver. Perfect dosage.

Finally, hard not to talk about what BMW fans find it most difficult to accept: this is front wheel drive. To begin with, we will say that, of course, it is a part of the BMW soul that is lacking, but let us remember that at Alfa or Ford for example, the switch from propulsion to traction did not prevent get cars that you would love to drive forever. And finally, the Series 2 Gran Coupé is in this category. All is certainly not perfect, but the grip of the front axle and the quality of the steering are remarkable, perhaps even more than in the 1 Series. The 2 Gran Coupé indeed seemed to us more fun, because equipped with 'a more responsive rear axle, probably thanks to the additional weight of the rear part.

In short, remember that the Series 2 Gran Coupé may not be the Bavarian of your dreams, but it is even less that of your nightmares!
