The tax administration began last Tuesday to make transfers to several million taxpayers for tax credits and refunds of "overpayments". The amounts can range from a few tens of euros to several thousand euros.

If you haven't checked your bank account in the past few days, you might be in for a good surprise. Since last Tuesday, the tax administration has made its transfers for tax credits and refunds of "overpayments" on 2019 income. Several million taxpayers will thus receive amounts ranging from a few dozen euros to several thousands of euros.

Clémence, for example, received a transfer of 3,500 euros on Friday from the public finance department. But she was not surprised: she had known since her income tax return in May that she would receive this sum during the summer. But when it does, it feels good. "It is true that it is very pleasant to receive a refund of an overpaid tax, even if you expected it, just before going on vacation. All the more after the confinement, which was complicated for everyone, ”she said.

An employment tax credit ...

Like Clémence, several million taxpayers have savored this moment… or will savor it if it has not yet taken place. Indeed, a second wave of payments will take place on August 7. Let's be clear: this is not a largesse from the tax administration. It is quite simply the consequence of two possible situations. First situation: you have received an employment tax credit (for example, from a nanny in 2019). The tax authorities paid you 60% of this last January, based on the tax credit you obtained the previous year.

Today he pays you the balance: the remaining 40% or a little more, or a little less, depending on what you entered on your return two months ago.

... or withholding taxes greater than the amount of your tax

Second situation: your deductions at source, carried out throughout the last year, were greater than the amount of your tax calculated after sending your return. There is therefore the reimbursement of an overpayment. This is the case if, for example, you lost your job, your income went down and you forgot to report it to the tax authorities, or you were late in reporting the birth of a child who gives you a half share. fiscal.

The great novelty with withholding tax is that you no longer have to wait until the time of declaration to report this type of change. You can do it in real time (by phone at 0.809.401.401 or by internet by going to impots.gouv.fr special area "manage my deduction at source"). This will prevent you from paying too much and waiting for the summer to be reimbursed.
