While accompanied driving targets teenagers from the age of 15, supervised driving is aimed at adults who have failed to obtain a license. - IStock / City Presse

If all roads do not necessarily lead to a driving license, young people still have various avenues available to them to obtain this sesame. In addition to the minimum training required in driving school to register for the exam, it is possible to opt for a more complete learning through the systems of accompanied driving and supervised driving.

The ground for learning

These two programs allow a learner driver to get behind the wheel, under certain conditions, even before having obtained a driving license. In all cases, you must go through an initial training in driving school including learning the Highway Code and at least 20 hours of practical driving with an instructor, all concluded with a favorable evaluation giving you the right to a certificate. end of initial training (AFFI).

Once the Code exam has been successfully passed, the young person will then be able to move around freely, subject to being accompanied by a motorist who has held a B license for at least five years and who has not undergone any cancellation or invalidation during this period. Beforehand, the tandem will have to complete a driving session of 2 hours on a driving school vehicle, during which the mentor will receive a guide dedicated to his role. Be careful to get the agreement of the insurance company before giving the wheel to your budding motorist.

Age as a reference

Although accompanied and supervised driving have a lot in common, they have one major difference: the target audience. The first, also called early learning to drive, is possible from the age of 15. To then have the right to take the practical driving license test, you must have driven with your guide for a year and traveled at least 3,000 km in France. This start-up will then allow you to benefit from a probationary license period reduced to two years.

Conversely, supervised driving is intended for learner drivers who are already adults. Most often, these are young people who have failed the practical test of the license who wish to be able to progress at a lower cost before taking it again. By virtue of a decree of May 18, 2020, access to this device has also been simplified. From now on, "in the event of failure of the driving test, any student has a right of access to supervised driving without delay or formality". In this context, the legislation does not impose any obligation of duration or mileage to be covered. You will register for the exam when you feel you are ready. Once the license is in hand, the probationary period will be three years.
