The turnover of the companies plummeted 33% last May compared to the same month of 2019, a rate 6.8 points higher than that of April, when it fell by 39.9%, its biggest drop in series, started in 2002, according to the Business Income Index (ICNE) published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the fall in May, the sales of the companies chain three consecutive months of important setbacks as a consequence of the effects of the health crisis.

In this sense, the INE has explained that since May 4, in accordance with the plan for the transition to a new normal, the commercial premises that were not allowed to sell to the public have been reopening their doors and adapting their capacity.

Hotels, tourist establishments and catering activities have also been able to open to the public with certain restrictions as the different territories have reached the different stages of the de-escalation.

This reactivation has led to an increase of 15.3% in company turnover in May compared to April.

The drop in business turnover in May was a consequence of the year-on-year decreases in services (-42%), industry (-33.1%), commerce (-29%) and the supply of electricity and water (- 25.3%) .

Corrected the seasonal and calendar effects, the turnover of the companies sank in the fifth month of the year by 30.6% compared to May 2019.

This evolution was a consequence of the drop in sales in services (-41.3%), industry (-29.3%), commerce (-27.2%) and the supply of electrical energy (-20.5%).

Monthly sales rise

In monthly rate (May over April) and eliminating the seasonal and calendar effect, the turnover of the companies grew by 15.3%, rate 41.2 higher than the previous month.

Commerce (+ 21.9%) and industry (+ 18.5%) were the sectors with the best monthly evolution, while the supply of electricity and water, sanitation and waste management was the only sector with a decrease in turnover. (-3.6%).
