Brexit, American taxes, political crisis in Hong-Kong, Covid-19… Nothing has been spared in Bordeaux vineyards in recent months, while the internal market for red wine is down trend. To the point that the president of the Interprofessional Council of Bordeaux wines (CIVB) raised this Wednesday the hypothesis of uprooting of vines as one of the possible responses to the severe crisis that the vineyard is going through.

“Let us dare to speak of uprooting!” Launched Bernard Farges during the general assembly of the interprofession in Bordeaux. It will take time and energy to go back up the hill. The president of the CIVB mentioned uprooting among other subjects hitherto approached "cautiously or timidly" but which must now "be put on the table". Grubbing-up, “if it is thought out, supported, organized, can be useful for the entire industry, in Bordeaux as elsewhere in France or in Europe. It can support companies towards the cessation, refocusing or diversification of their activity, to also restore competitiveness by raising yields per hectare ”.

Organic and promotion

Among the other avenues to explore, according to Bernard Farges, is “organic and conventional diversity on a farm. If we reason this mix by cultural islands, we will see a large number of companies going organic on part of their vineyard. We will do away with the sterile debate between organic and conventional ”. According to him, the Bordeaux vineyard, already 65% certified by an environmental label, must embark entirely on a sustainable development approach, a movement that the CIVB intends to federate under the slogan "Bordeaux grow tomorrow".

Bernard Farges also hoped that the OCM (common market organization) wine aid could be used for the promotion of wines: "We must collectively make the choice to [...] devote our means to sell, sell, sell". The CIVB has also decided to reserve part of the production of the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur AOCs, the largest in Bordeaux in volume and red.
