Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya has been ruled out today as a candidate to head the World Trade Organization (WTO) for her "very personal decision" to "work from Spain to contribute to multilateralism" as head of Spanish diplomacy.

In an informative breakfast organized by Europa Press, Arancha González Laya has said that the most "prudent" thing is to discard his candidacy. And she has joked that she does not know that anyone has presented it on her behalf. The next deadline ends the deadline for the presentation of candidates.

The minister's self-dismissal occurs only a day before the European Union debates who will be the next president of the Eurogroup. In this case, the best placed is the economic vice president of the Government, Nadia Calviño.

Laya has included her retirement in "a very personal decision". As she explained, she arrived in Spain as minister on January 14 after spending more than 20 years occupying different responsibilities in international organizations and outside the country. For this reason, she emphasized, she now has the "illusion of contributing to commercial multilateralism and multilateralism in general from Spain".

"I am not aware that a candidacy has been presented on my behalf, I am committed to my country and to the direction of the EU's foreign policy and development cooperation in my country, that is where I am wanting" , has added.

Asked about Nadia Calviño's candidacy, however, she assured that her candidacy to preside over the Eurogroup is "extremely solid". And she has been confident that she is chosen because, in her opinion, she is the best candidate of all the names that have been put on the table.

The Mexican Jesús Seade, the Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the Egyptian Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh are for now the three candidates in the running to succeed the Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, who will leave office on August 31, one year before the end of his term , alleging "personal reasons".

González Laya had sounded like a candidate for her extensive experience in the governing organization of world trade, where she was chief of staff for the former director general, Pascal Lamy. In addition, she directed the International Trade Center (ITC), a bridge institution between the WTO and the United Nations.
