Ford Puma - DR

We also find on the "face" of this compact SUV something of the small Puma coupe from the late 90s, like the domed hood and the shape of the headlights. Other than that, the Puma has of course typical proportions of the segment, and what it takes to feel muscles under the skin. The very inclined rear window gives a more sporty look than "practical family" (but appearances are misleading) and according to some, it gives the Puma a little air of Porsche Macan. Everyone will judge.

At 4.2 meters, the Puma is one of the most compact SUVs of the moment, but its wheelbase in the standard (2.59 meters) guarantees a cabin as spacious as the others ... or almost. Because Ford has chosen not to sacrifice the trunk too much, which implies a compromise, especially on the seat length of the rear seats. The 456-liter trunk (402 liters for the light hybrid version) is indeed very honorable for the category, but above all there is the "MegaBox", a waterproof compartment large enough for a cabin suitcase, or rather for sports clothing and other mud mud boots, which can be rinsed with plenty of water thanks to the small cap at the bottom of this compartment. Nice tip.

Ahead of its time

In terms of on-board technologies, the Puma is not low cost. From the 12.3 '' digital instrument cluster to the multimedia system with 4G connection, nothing is missing. We especially remember that the Puma is ready for the next phase of connectivity: when the cars communicate with each other and with the infrastructures, it will be able to warn the driver in real time of the presence on its route of obstacles not yet visible, such as works , pedestrians, animals or objects on the road. In the meantime, the now classic of the genre, such as intelligent cruise control or active lane keeping assistance, are present.

Under the hood, Ford has retained only the excellent 3-cylinder EcoBoost petrol, available in 4 versions: classic 95 or 125 horsepower, and light hybridization versions 125 or 155 horsepower. As a reminder, light hybridization assists the heat engine and gives it a little boost in order to reduce consumption and emissions, but does not allow driving in electric mode.

We took the 155hp in hand, in a ST-Line X finish. First remark: the engine vibrates when starting, but these vibrations disappear once on the way. We then note that this finish receives particularly firm suspensions. OK, that sounds sporty, but it may be a little too much and it could prove tiring in the long run. Moreover, the test of a Titanium finish, much more conciliatory in terms of depreciation, seems to confirm it. That said, this firmness is synonymous with impeccable body support when cornering and engaged driving, it plays favorably on pleasure.

In the end, we only have one regret: despite its hybridization, the 1.0 EcoBoost still lacks flexibility in the city.
