Adjusted to reduce the amount of power generated by old coal-fired power plants by approximately 90% Government 12:09 on July 2

The government has decided to reconsider the ideal way of coal-fired power generation. We have started to make adjustments to reduce the amount of power generated by old coal-fired power plants, which emit a large amount of carbon dioxide, by about 90% by 2030.

Regarding power generation by coal-fired power generation, while efforts for decarbonization are required based on the international framework "Paris Agreement" for countermeasures against global warming, there is a movement to review it internationally as it emits a large amount of carbon dioxide. I'm getting stronger.

On the other hand, the ratio of coal-fired power generation to domestic power generation amounted to 31% in FY2018, which is the main power source. Under these circumstances, the government has decided to reconsider the positioning of coal-fired power generation. We have started to make adjustments to reduce the amount of electricity generated by the old-type coal-fired power plant, which has low efficiency and emits a large amount of carbon dioxide, by 90% by 2030.

Specifically, a method is being considered in which electric power companies set an upper limit on the amount of power that can be generated, and suspend or abolish old power plants to gradually lower the amount.

On the other hand, we are also permitting the construction of new, highly efficient coal-fired power plants that reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The reduction of about 90% is equivalent to about 100 power plants, but we are considering a mechanism that will not be abolished immediately in order to prevent large-scale power outages in the event of a disaster, etc. Will be installed.

Kajiyama's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry has decided to clarify this policy.
