The number of unemployment benefits will increase by 106,000 in the next eighteen months compared to the end of 2019, the UWV announced on Tuesday. This, together with the introduction of new schemes, means higher costs at the UWV.

Published Tuesday, Juninota, the UWV reports that the number of unemployment benefits will increase by 84,000 this year. This brings the expected total for the end of 2020 to 306,500. This increases unemployment benefits to 4.8 billion euros, an increase of 1.2 billion euros compared to the end of 2019.

An additional 22,000 new benefits are expected to be added in 2021, which for the time being will result in unemployment benefits of 5.4 billion euros. The UWV bases itself on the calculations of the Central Planning Bureau for employment. Due to the current uncertainty on the labor market, the UWV warns that unemployment benefits may rise by 2.2 billion in 2021.

Due to the introduction of regulations such as the temporary Emergency Measure Bridging for Employment (NOW) and the Compensation for transition compensation, the costs of the UWV have doubled, according to Nathalie van Berkel, member of the Executive Board.

"We expect to spend 21.8 billion euros on benefits this year. This is 1.9 billion euros more than last year. In addition, we are paying out more because of new schemes. The transitional compensation scheme, but especially the NOW, will come here this year. about 20 billion euros in expenses still on top, "says Van Berkel.
