The Irish government has recommended that its citizens cancel holiday plans or avoid making reservations for the summer, given concerns about an increase in cases of coronavirus in this country.

The medical chief of the Irish Ministry of Health, Tony Holohan, warned on Tuesday that a "worrying trend" is "beginning to be detected", with "information on increases in cases and new outbreaks".

The latest official figures indicated on Monday that there were no new deaths in the previous 24 hours, which kept the number of deaths at 1,735, although 24 new infections were detected, up to a total of 25,462.

Holohan said that one of those new outbreaks of Covid-19 is located in the northwest of the country and that it is a case related to a trip to Iraq, while at least five other new infections are also linked to transfers abroad.

The expert declared himself "deeply concerned" about the impact that the reopening of the borders will have on July 9, when the Dublin Executive plans to relax travel restrictions with the establishment of air bridges with certain countries.

"Many countries around the world continue to have high levels of this disease. Last week, more than 1.1 million cases were recorded and there are now more than 10 million global cases. The risk of imported cases remains high. It is important that we continue to avoid unnecessary travel, "Holohan said.

Accordingly, he urged those who have reservations to spend "a vacation abroad" to cancel those plans, in order to avoid the risk of "catching COVID-19" and bringing the disease to "members of their families and from the local community. "

To date, the Irish Government has successfully halted the coronavirus epidemic, according to general consensus, and brought forward to Monday the start of the third phase of the de-escalation, after decreeing mandatory confinement on March 28.

Yesterday the cafeterias, restaurants, hotels, tourist and cultural attractions, hairdressers, gyms and the "pubs" that serve "substantial" meals (which cost at least 9 euros) reopened , although all these establishments must comply with strict measures of security and social distance.
