• Consumption.The best beers in the supermarket for less than 2 euros

The beer has been one of the star products of confinement. Along with toilet paper and the yeast boom, sales of this drink in supermarkets have grown at a good pace, exceeding a 20% increase compared to the same period last year.

A report by the Organization of Consumers and Users ( OCU ) puts this increase at 78% , according to data provided by the Association of Spanish Supermarkets.

The OCU has recently published an analysis of the best beers that can be found in these establishments. The organization has analyzed 34 Lager beers , 17 classic and 17 special, all in 33cl cans, the best-selling format in Spain. Fourteen of these beers, the most consumed style in our country, are private label.

MERCADONA, AMONG THE BEST BEERS

One of the best valued is, precisely, a white label beer. This is Steinburg Special , from Mercadona , which is sold in the Juan Roig supermarket for 0.28 cents a unit , manufactured by BIRC SPA. This supplier has the facilities in northern Italy. The Valencian company also receives beers from suppliers in Belgium and Morocco.

This beer has been chosen as "Master Purchase" by the OCU for having "the best relation between price and quality" of all those grouped in the Special category, prevailing over Mahou Cinco Estrellas, selected as "the best in the analysis".

In the classic beers section , Gordon Gard, white label of Eroski supermarkets , has been selected as the Master Purchase, while Mahou Clásica and Amstel have been selected as the best in analysis.

ONLY INDUSTRIAL BEERS

The OCU report does not go into evaluating craft beers sold in supermarkets. These types of drinks are increasingly present on the shelves of supermarkets. Brands like La Virgen , Arriaca or Domus are common in food chains such as Mercadona or Carrefour.

Some even, like the Alcarrian woman from Arriaca, produce the special white-label beer that the German Aldi supermarkets sell in our country under the Karsquell banner.

The OCU points out some deficiencies in the labeling, which does not show the complete list of ingredients although it is not mandatory. It also draws attention to the abusive use of terms such as Premium or Quality that "can be confusing at the time of purchase".
