To limit the risk of bike theft, the authorities recommend marking it with the Bicycode system. - Photo Cycling

500,000 is the number of bikes stolen each year in France. To combat this phenomenon, the authorities have set up a bicycle marking system, using the Bicycode identification device.

What is that ?

Created by the French Federation of bicycle users in 2004, this unique and standardized number is engraved on the frame of the bikes and referenced in a national file accessible online on the Bicycode.org website. The objective? To deter criminals by making concealment and resale more difficult, but also to make it possible to find the owners of the devices. In fact, of the 150,000 bikes recovered each year by the authorities, only 3% are returned for lack of identification.

Thanks to the signing of a partnership with the public authorities in 2015, the police have general access to the Bicycode register to facilitate their searches. To date, this device is also the only one recognized by the State.

How to do ?

Although the identification of bikes is highly recommended, it is however not compulsory. If you wish to have your bicycle marked, you must go to one of the 130 approved Bicycode marking operators with your identity document and the cycle invoice. To find the one closest to you, consult the interactive list offered on Bicycode.org. At the end of this operation, which costs between 5 and 10 euros, the professional will issue you the "passport" of your frame which you will then have to register in the online database.

Legislators move up a gear

Between 2004 and 2019, 400,000 cycles were marked, while some 3 million are sold per year. As part of the Cycling Plan, the government therefore intends to gradually generalize this system. To do this, the Mobility Orientation Law, published on December 26, 2019, makes it mandatory to identify bicycles from 2021.
