Secoma, which runs the convenience store chain “Seiko Mart” mainly in Hokkaido, has decided to make it free for the time being, even after next month, when it becomes mandatory for retail stores nationwide to pay for plastic shopping bags.

In order to reduce plastic waste, retail stores nationwide are obliged to charge a plastic shopping bag from the 1st of next month based on the national system.

Under these circumstances, Secoma, which develops the convenience store chain “Seiko Mart” mainly in Hokkaido, decided to make it free of charge for the time being next month after more than 1200 stores of the group.

The reason is to use bags that contain 25% or more of biomass material, which is not covered by the national system.

Initially, the company was considering paying a fee, but due to the widespread economic impact of the new coronavirus, it is supposed to be free for the time being to avoid burdening users, and the timing of future payments We will continue to carefully consider the price of plastic bags and shopping bags.

Regarding shopping bags, three major convenience stores, Seven-Eleven Japan, FamilyMart, and Lawson, use bags that are not subject to charge as in Secoma, but some of them are excluded to reduce the amount of waste. We decided to charge for 3 yen per piece, and the support has become divided.
