The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, presented this Thursday the plan to support the tourism sector, endowed with more than 4,250 million euros and which includes promotional campaigns . The Executive presents this package to reactivate the main engine of our economy a few days after the Schengen area opens and two weeks after the borders are opened to the rest of the countries.

This amount will be used to "position Spain" as a safe destination and to improve the competitiveness of the sector . The plan includes the creation of a 2,500 million ICO line of guarantees. In addition, 850 million euros will be used to promote a model based on sustainability and digitization and a tourist intelligence observatory will be created. "The recovery of tourism is one of our greatest strengths," said Sánchez.

The President highlighted the value of tourism, "as part of our culture and way of life" and recalled that more than 83,000 companies in the sector have accessed the almost 11,000 million euros of ICO lines and 147,000 companies have accepted the temporary employment regulation files (ERTE), which have benefited 1.12 million workers.

Stop impact

Tourism, which represents 12% of the national wealth, is Spain's oil, its economic pillar, and it has also been the sector hardest hit by the pandemic, to the point that the collapse of activity accounts for half of the GDP drop that the Bank of Spain predicts for this year.

It is a transversal sector, which encompasses many others, such as hospitality, transport, leisure ... Since the state of alarm was decreed, the sector has demanded a package of specific aid to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, with losses estimated at more than 83,000 million euros.

According to Sánchez, the Government is going to use "all the promotional and marketing tools" to position Spain as a safe destination. Specifically, the Government has launched the promotional campaign "discover the incredible" to stimulate demand and, according to Sánchez, an international communication campaign will also be carried out to attract international tourists.

Spain is the second country for tourist spending and the second also (after France) in number of foreign tourists, with 83 million visits in 2019. The plan was presented at an institutional event at the Palacio de la Moncloa in which they Six ministers, representatives of the CEOE, from the tourism sector, from the main unions and local entities participated.
