A few hours after the mobility restrictions imposed with the state of alarm since last March are removed, Aena has announced that travelers will find more sanitary controls, more disinfection and more capacity limitations before taking a flight from anywhere in Spain.

These are some of the measures of the new airport security protocol that Maurici Lucena , president of the company, has announced during his appearance at the Business Summit organized by the CEOE . These and others will come into force from next week , as specified by the executive, to guarantee "safe airport processes".

"We collaborate with the Government of Spain, with the European Commission and with the airlines to design what you will be able to see from next week: a different queue management, much deeper disinfection processes, maximum capacity, distances minimum , sanitary controls on international flights that will consist of taking temperature without being noticed because it will be done with thermal imaging cameras and also the collection and reading of a form that allows the authorities to have the trace in the event that it is necessary to locate it if there is a contagion next ", has detailed Lucena.

All this is part of the "recovery design" that the company has embarked on to face the crisis generated in the sector as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. In this new strategy, Aena is aware that it must have the rest of the companies that participate in the daily activity of airports and that also now face a complicated situation. "We are aware of the tractor effect we produce and we have tried to be flexible by applying discounts, deferrals and exemptions in payments" to those businesses that the traveler encounters during her stay at airports.

In addition, the operator wants to increase the number of planes and has approved a "commercial incentive" for airlines to have their devices at Spanish airfields. " We are concerned that there are more planes and we will make a discount on the landing fee, divided into different sections, to encourage movement in airports in the coming months," explained Maurici Lucena.

The company thus tries to circumvent the impact that the coronavirus has had in the sector after 2019 of positive record activity. Among other effects, the paralysis of the routes caused a drop in air traffic of more than 99% in April and May and that forced the operator to rethink its strategy. "The reaction at the beginning of the crisis was almost instinctive to respond to the enormous stress to which the company has been subjected," said the president of Aena during his appearance. To do this, the first measure was to protect the company's cash and reduce cash spending by almost 40%, "saving almost 100 million euros a month."

Then they started a round of liquidity with the banks, "so that we now have more than 3,000 million euros that give us peace of mind to face the coming months."

In this future strategy, the company has resumed the investment initiative and has announced that it will invest more than 1,200 million between 2020 and 2021 in infrastructure and, in connection with large pending airport projects, such as the expansions of Madrid and Barcelona, "our intention it is to continue with them, but it is possible that they move in time significantly, although they will end up doing it, "said the president.
