The hibernation of the economy has turned Renfe's forecasts for 2020 into dead paper and the public operator has transferred to its staff its intention to apply to the part of wages linked to production a cut proportional to the drop in activity. The variable part of wages is calculated taking as factors the number of train trips, the number of passengers and income. According to internal sources of the company it can be between 5,000 and 12,000 euros per year depending on the position and the cut would reach up to 40%.

The unions present in the company have opposed the measure outright, raised on June 11. They have transferred to management the argument that the reason why there has been a decline in operator production is the government's decision to restrict mobility, a decision outside the company, and that variable pay should be adjusted on other parameters.

The company, however, has decided to start the cuts already in the payroll of this month of June, completely eliminating it to management personnel and by 20% on the so-called support structure . The idea about the operating personnel is not to delay the decision to avoid it becoming apparent in March 2021 when it finishes liquidating.

Renfe official sources have indicated that "there is no record of anything or any communication." The CSIF union , for its part, has stated in a note that "contrary to what the Government has stated, which has ensured that the salary conditions of public employees are not going to be touched, it is a reduction in wages throughout a rule that even affects employees who have been working during the alarm state in person, exposed to the virus. "

For its part, CCOO recalled that the reductions in activity come due to the limitations imposed by the Government itself and underlines that Renfe already has about 2,000 people on board services in suspension of employment and with a contest yet to launch since the contract with Ferrovial expired last April. To assist the trains that it now has in circulation, Renfe employs around 70 people on this staff.

The company suspended the launch of its low-cost AVLO service, scheduled for last Easter as part of its strategy to tackle the liberalization of passenger transport.
