Faced with the Israeli plan to annex part of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Jordan is stepping up interventions in an attempt to prevent its realization.
King Abdullah first issued a public warning last month in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel , saying the project carries the risk of increasing " chaos and extremism " in the region .
This week, the Jordanian sovereign also fought his battle with foreign decision-makers. First of all in the United States, whose peace plan presented in January paved the way for this project of Benjamin Netanyahu.
Addressing by videoconference to elected members of the American Congress, King Abdullah judged that the annexation is " unacceptable ", and recalled the importance in his eyes of creating " an independent , sovereign and viable Palestinian state ". He also met Wednesday evening with the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, a country which has approached Israel in recent years but which also denounces this project of annexation.
In Ramallah, this Thursday, Ayman Safadi reported to the President of the Palestinian Authority on the results of his country's diplomatic campaign. For Jordan, the stakes are high enough to justify a personal investment by the king for several weeks.
