Water savers can reduce your consumption by 30% to 60%. - IStock / City Presse

In France, each inhabitant consumes an average of 148 liters of water per day for all uses, according to a report published by companies in the sector. A relatively high figure, which generates expenses amounting to 425 euros per year per household, according to INSEE.

To avoid wasting this precious resource and reducing your bill, there are many things you can do. Among these solutions, one of the simplest and least expensive is the installation of water savers on your taps.

What type of economizer to choose?

These devices are in the form of tips to place on the spouts of your taps. Their goal is to decrease the flow, in order to minimize waste. There are different kinds on the market. Flow restrictors, column or rain jets often used in communities (schools, health facilities) are not recommended because they increase the pressure in the pipes, which can deteriorate the seals.

The most popular are flow limiters. Also called aerators or aerators, they work by absorbing air to combine it with the outgoing water, creating a jet of foamy appearance. Thanks to this phenomenon called "venturi effect", the flow is reduced but not the pressure. Only downside: if you have a gas boiler, the flow rate may not be enough to activate it, sometimes depriving you of hot water. Finally, the flow regulators are the most upscale. They are equipped with an O-ring which adapts the flow according to your needs, to optimize your consumption and your comfort.

A rapidly profitable investment

One of the main advantages of economizers is their price. Count around 5 euros for a flow reducer, 8 to 10 euros for a limiter, and 20 euros for a regulator. By equipping all the taps in your home, you will get by for 50 euros on average. However, these devices can reduce your water consumption by 30% to 60%. Your purchase will therefore be amortized after six to ten months.

In addition, models with air blowing slow the formation of tartar and therefore have a longer service life than conventional tips. Finally, as part of the energy saving certificates, certain energy producers offer free aerator kits. Find out more on websites or from your municipality.

How to install a water saver?

No need to call on a plumber or be an experienced handyman to set up an economizer. After having made your choice between flow limiter, regulator or reducer, opt for male rings if your thread is located inside your faucet, or female rings if the thread is outside.

Most manufacturers offer complete kits that easily adapt to all types of installation. Then, you just have to screw.
