"I feel very safe, Mallorca is coronafree ". Karlsten is the first tourist in Spain after the coronavirus. A flight from Düsseldorf has just landed in Palma and comes with suitcase and mask, ready to spend a few days of "calm" in a hotel on the island. "The atmosphere on the flight was very calm, trustworthy."

"We are calm and we want to enjoy the island," says George, another German citizen from Cologne who comes to a tourist apartment in the south of the island, near the idyllic port of Portocolom. "Also, in Germany now the image of Spain is very good, people know that the islands are not full of drunks and crowds now."

They are the testimonies of the first two Germans who have stepped on Spanish territory this morning with the label of tourists, participants in the experimental test with which Mallorca opens up to tourism before any other destination in Spain . They have landed from Düsseldorf, on a flight with 180 passengers that has landed 20 minutes late, after 10:45 in the morning.

Experimental test

350 Germans who will arrive throughout the day from Düsseldorf and Frankfurt are the advance guard of the pilot plan that the Spanish Government approved last week after a month of demands from the Balearic government, the Majorcan hotel sector and the main European tour operators, led by the German giant TUI.

The coordinated work of the lobby found the support of the Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, who has held meetings in recent weeks with the most important Spanish hoteliers, including the Balearic Islands. However, there was more resistance at the Ministry of Health, which finally gave the green light to the plan, using as its main argument the epidemiological equivalence between the Balearic Islands and the German regions from which tourists will depart.

On paper, permission has been given for 10,900 Germans to arrive in the next 15 days, although the test will only last for a week when the borders are opened throughout the national territory next week. 47 flights are already scheduled. In addition, and despite the fact that it was raised that tourists would arrive in closed tourist packages, the transit to Germans with a second residence in the archipelago has also finally been opened, a very large community that has been demanding days from the Balearic authorities to allow them to come to enjoy their houses.

More than two hundred Germans have sent letters to the Armengol government asking for free entry. "I do not see it more risky to be in a spacious hotel in Mallorca than in a Bavarian brewery," TUI CEO Friedrich Joussen, one of the main protagonists of this operation, told the newspaper EL MUNDO, who yesterday sent his number two to attend to the media and oversee the plan on the ground.

Tourists arriving this week will not be required to have a previous test in their home cities. During the flight, they are given a questionnaire that they must fill out, and upon arrival at the airport, their temperature is taken and they are required to provide their contact information. The Balearic health authorities will call you and, in case of symptoms, you will be isolated in one of the tourist apartments that have been reserved by the Balearic Government.
