Yesterday, Etihad Airways made its first flight from Abu Dhabi to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica.

The trip transported citizens from Costa Rica back to the country from the Emirates and humanitarian assistance provided by the Abu Dhabi government to help Costa Rica cope with the emerging Corona Virus pandemic (Covid-19).

The trip also carried citizens of the Dominican Republic, and landed in Santo Domingo, before continuing its journey to Costa Rica.

The trip was received by Costa Rican government officials and diplomats from the Emirati embassy in San Jose.

Following the suspension of all scheduled flights for travelers to and from the UAE on March 24, Etihad operated special humanitarian flights to 34 cities that are not on the global network of destinations the company operates for passenger and cargo flights.

These destinations included Bogota, Havana, Santo Domingo, Bucharest, Grozny, Kiev, Larnaca, Podgorica, Tirana, Yerevan, Zagreb, Auckland, Bhubaneswar, Bishkek, Dushanbe, Dhaka, Erbil, Kabul, Lucknow, Makhachkala, Addis Ababa, Antananarivo, Bamako, Banjul, Conakry, Freetown, Harare, Kinshasa, Moroni, N'Djamena, Niamey and Nouakchott. It also operated special flights to transport medical and humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territories.
