This is the big news this year: the tax return, which French taxpayers must complete in the days or weeks to come, is pre-filled by the tax authorities. This does not exempt from being careful and rereading everything well.

The deadlines are fast approaching: Thursday June 4 at midnight, taxpayers residing in departments 01 to 19 must have completed their tax return in order to pay their tax. It will be Monday June 8 for those who reside in the departments 20 to 54, Thursday June 11 for all other departments including the Overseas, and Friday June 12 for those who make a paper declaration.

And the big news this year is the fact that 12 million tax households have, in principle, nothing to do: their declaration is completely pre-filled by the tax administration. But beware, this is only a principle. And it is nevertheless prudent to check the data entered in order to be able to supplement them, if necessary.

Who is affected by this pre-filled declaration?

If you were taxed last year and this taxation was made only on income that the administration had recovered directly from third-party organizations (your employer, for example, for wages, your pension fund… or your bank for your income from financial investments), then you are concerned by the pre-filled declaration. The tax authorities consider that if this was your case in 2019, there is a good chance that it will be the same in 2020. And therefore that you do not need to get down to this thinking of the declaration.

What should you still check?

There may be information that has escaped the tax administration. And which, if you don't pass it on to them, can ultimately make you pay too much tax. For example, a change in situation such as the birth of a child which entitles you to an additional half-share, or new expenses which you have made and which make you eligible for tax reductions: hiring an employee at home or donations to charities for example.

There are also revenues that the tax administration cannot know and that you must add if you have collected them. This is the case for example of the rents of a property that you have rented. Hence this advice: reread everything that has been written on your return and complete everything that needs to be completed. If you do nothing, what is pre-printed will be deemed to be validated and signed by you. And will bind you vis-à-vis the taxman.

Europe 1 helps its listeners to complete their tax returns. Set up in partnership with Le Parisien Today in France, the operation "Allo taxes" takes place throughout the day of this Wednesday, June 3 with the opening of a specific switchboard, 3921, which you can call from 8 am to 7 pm (50 euro cents per minute in addition to the cost of the call). At the end of the line, members of the Order of Chartered Accountants will be able to respond in a personalized manner to all the questions you ask yourself.
