According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the number of housing starts nationwide last month was 69,162, a 12.9% decrease from the same month last year. The number of new housing starts has decreased for the 10th consecutive month, and in April it fell below 70,000 for the first time in nine years since 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Looking at the breakdown, the number of "owned houses" indicating custom-built homes decreased by 17.4% to 21,015 units, "rental homes" such as rental apartments decreased by 15.4% to 24,976 units, and "condominiums" decreased by 3.6% to 20,000. It was 2557 units.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said, "There are cases in which procedures for construction work were delayed in April due to the national emergency declaration, and the number of units is expected to decrease in May."
