The management of Gibert Joseph bookstores announced Thursday that it had requested the liquidation of three of its 31 stores in France. "The first independent bookstore in France, the Gibert bookstore has requested the liquidation of the bookstores in Aubergenville (Yvelines), Chalon-sur-Saône, and Clermont-Ferrand", announced the management of the brand in a communicated.

If the Chalon-sur-Saône bookstore will be able to benefit from a stay until June 22, the time to find a possible buyer, the Versailles Commercial Court announced the immediate liquidation of the Aubergenville brand. For this bookstore, the cessation of activity is recorded and the fifteen employees it counted find themselves unemployed. Located in the Family Village shopping area, the bookstore located on the A 13 motorway had not resumed its activity after confinement.

The CGT standing wind

Also subject to a request for judicial liquidation, the fate of the Clermont-Ferrand bookstore will be known on Tuesday 2 June, the hearing scheduled for Thursday having been postponed. Established since 1942 in the city center, this bookstore is one of the oldest shops in the prefecture of Puy-de-Dôme and almost an institution in Auvergne.

The decision of Gibert Joseph's management had been denounced on Saturday by the CGT. "No economic consideration, of whatever kind, can justify these practices: in the current period, placing employees in a situation of unemployment in weakened employment areas by only granting them legal compensation is scandalous" , said the CGT union of the brand.

Gibert Joseph's management justified its decision by highlighting “the contraction of the cultural goods market, changes in consumption habits (at the expense of retail in physical stores) and the recent events of 2019-2020 (transport strikes, yellow vests demonstrations and recent health crisis linked to the coronavirus) ”. These are "all factors that have impacted the Gibert group, already very weakened by an increased competitive environment," said management. The three bookstores placed in compulsory liquidation employ a total of thirty employees.
