The RN 116 is closed, prey to ground movements - Prefecture of the Pyrenees-Orientales

For the inhabitants of the Pyrenees-Orientales, it is a relief: the national road 116 reopens Tuesday afternoon, after more than three months of closure. Alternating circulation will be set up at first, announces the prefecture.

Opening of # RN116 in alternating circulation Tuesday May 19 at 5 p.m.
5 companies are mobilized on the two sites of #Pallat and #Riubanys, under the supervision of the DIRSO to help restore this major traffic lane.

The axis, clad with cracks and crevices, had been closed to traffic, cutting off access to the mountains. At the beginning of February, the road had been the victim of an impressive ground movement, consequence of the passage of the Gloria storm, which made it impassable. Since then, residents have had to make a (big) detour.

The damage on the RN 116 has evolved since yesterday. The ground movement is still in progress. Expertises are continuing. Deviations by:

Work suspended due to the epidemic

Works, to allow the reopening of this central road in the department, had been undertaken on February 18. But they had to be suspended at the start of the Covid-19 epidemic on March 17. The site was finally able to resume on March 30.

The closure of this essential axis for the municipalities of Conflent, which serves Spain and Andorra, has put tourism professionals at risk in the department. Ski resorts, hotels and elected officials had expressed their fears this winter.
