Spain has extended the restrictions for the entry of travelers from outside the EU to our country . In a ministerial order published this Thursday in the Official State Gazette (BOE) by the Ministry of the Interior, it expands the application of this temporary prohibition measure adopted on March 17 by the member countries of the European Council to limit the expansion of the coronavirus .

According to this order, entry will be denied to all citizens from outside the EU, except citizens "who are going to their place of residence", people who have a long-term visa issued by one of the member states, the workers border, health workers or workers who are engaged in the transport of goods, diplomatic staff and persons showing a personal motive force majeure.

This week the Spanish Government agreed to impose a 14-day quarantine on all people arriving from a foreign country (including Europe), with the exceptions mentioned. That same day Interior also extended the controls at the internal air and sea borders until May 24 to ensure de-escalation and contain "the risks of contagion".

In theory, the quarantine measure imposed by Spain is maintained during the alarm period , which ends on May 24. At the moment, it is not known if it will continue further, in the event that the state of alarm also expands, as the Government intends. France, for its part, has responded to this measure by imposing its own quarantine on Spaniards traveling to French territory. The Elysium alleges "reasons of reciprocity".

Closing to tourism

The borders at the moment are closed to tourism and only the mentioned essential trips or for exceptional reasons are allowed . However, this week the European Commission has recommended to the member countries that they relax the restrictions so that the tourist activity resumes. Germany, for example, has announced that it will relax controls from today until fully opening borders from June 15.

Members of the European Council already agreed to restrict borders to third-country travelers to the EU in March, and in May it was decided to extend these restrictions. "In its communication on the restriction of non-essential travel to the European Union, of May 8, the Commission recommends the extension of the aforementioned restrictions, in this case until June 15," justifies the Interior order.

All these restrictions, especially the quarantine measure, have been criticized by the Spanish tourism sector, which considers that this discourages tourist tourists who are now considering their vacations. They point out that this is a deterrent measure that will lead them to choose other destinations with less incidence of the coronavirus and also with fewer prohibitions.

Spain received more than 80 million tourists in the last year and, although our main source markets are the United Kingdom and Germany, the arrivals of visitors from these countries were falling and the markets that were growing above all were some of the non-EU countries, the USA. and Asia.
