While the six Amazon warehouses in France have been closed since April 16, the American online commerce giant is working on a "gradual reopening", after an agreement with the unions on the conditions for resuming activity.

Amazon "is working on a gradual reopening from May 19" in France, the management of the American online commerce giant told AFP on Friday after the unions announced an agreement "on the conditions for resuming the activity".

"The trade union organizations CFDT, CGT, FO and SUD and the management of Amazon have just agreed on the conditions for resuming the activity of the six warehouses located in our territory, from May 19," say the unions in a statement.

The six Amazon warehouses in France have been closed since April 16, after a judgment directing the company to conduct a risk assessment with employee representatives.

A recovery "on the principle of volunteering"

"The recovery will be gradual. It will be on the principle of volunteering, with incentives," they continue in a joint statement, sent by the CFDT.

The specific terms of this recovery, including the "scaling up" of the number of employees called to work in warehouses must be finalized Monday at CSE (social and economic committees), according to Sud, first union at Amazon.

Sud Commerce hails "a second victory"

Laurent Degousée of Sud Commerce greeted Friday a "second victory for the 11,000 employees of Amazon after the victory of the two judgments, in first instance and in appeal, which made it possible to shelter them from the virus".

For the CFDT, "the positive development of this negotiation is an important step in the acculturation of this company to our country, to its rules and to the requirements of the CFDT for a liveable and dignified world of work".
