Airlines are currently experiencing major turbulence, and some may not recover. Air France-KLM lost billions of euros due to the coronavirus epidemic. The group announces internally a vast workforce reduction plan.

Hard landing for Air France-KLM: the airline's losses per billion will also translate into fewer jobs.

Yes, we can already announce it to you: the job cuts will be "significant", as an internal source tells us. It is difficult to see how it could be otherwise.

Imagine: this quarter, Air France-KLM activity was reduced by 95%. It will still be 80% in the third quarter. This is the lot of all airlines, even if they are not all in the same boat. In its misfortune, Air France-KLM is the one in Europe which was the first to receive state aid: seven billion euros from the French state and soon between two and four billion from the Dutch state. .

But despite this, Air France-KLM will have to reduce the airfoil.

Yes, the boss Ben Smith believes that we will not find the level of pre-crisis activity for several years. Air France-KLM will therefore reduce its flights "by at least 20%" we are told internally. It will reduce its fleet (Air France has around 300 aircraft and KLM 1,540) and it will also reduce its workforce.

Air France has 45,000 employees, this gives you an idea of the social shock that is brewing. Voluntary departure plans will be presented to employees in late June-early July. Regional lines well served by the TGV such as Nantes, Bordeaux or Lyon will be greatly reduced. The consequences of the crisis will quickly become very concrete.
