March was a black month for tourism in Spain. It was the first month with the state of alarm and already in those weeks the borders in Europe were closed and restrictions on movement between countries began. The consequence of this is that the arrival of foreign tourists to fell by 64% and spending by 60% , according to data published today by the National Statistics Institute.

Our country is not used to these figures, but quite the opposite: each month tourism rebounded and broke a new record of arrivals. But the coronavirus has devastated the sector. Already in February, when the Mobile World Congress was canceled, the fall was on the horizon, and although visits and spending grew by around 1%, the arrival of Chinese tourists did collapse, which were those who lived in a first phase the Covid crisis.

Spain received two million international tourists in March, 64.3% less than in the same month of 2019. The United Kingdom was the main issuing country, with 397,117 tourists, representing 19.7% of the total and a decrease of 64 , 2% compared to March last year.

France and Germany were the following countries with the most tourists who visited Spain. France contributed 288,903 (57.3% less in annual rate) and Germany 277,862 (65.7% less). In addition, tourist spending by international visitors was 322 million euros, equivalent to a 60.9% drop compared to March last year.
