Already under pressure and monitored by justice in many countries, Amazon confirmed Tuesday that an employee of its New York warehouses had died from coronavirus suites. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a collaborator at our site in Staten Island, New York. We keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts and we support his colleagues, "said a spokesperson at 20 Minutes .

According to Amazon, the employee was last present on the site on April 5. He would not have been in contact with another employee who tested positive or who showed symptoms of the disease, said Amazon. The group believes that none of the cases of coronavirus found in the warehouse workforce - about 30 according to the unions - is directly related to another, which would mean that the employees have all contracted the virus out of their place of work.

Extended closure until May 8 in France

Amazon has been regularly accused of failing to take the measures necessary to provide its employees with adequate protection against the spread of the Covid-19. Several work stoppages were observed on different sites by employees who felt they were insufficiently protected, notably on Staten Island.

In France, Amazon had suspended the activity of its distribution centers until May 5 after a court decision forced it to assess the risks of spreading the coronavirus on its sites, under the threat of heavy fines. "We expect to extend the temporary closure of our centers in France until Friday, May 8," said a spokesperson for 20 Minutes Tuesday evening.
